Dating or
Engaged?
PREPARE-ENRICH
PROGRAM
Ø Are you a dating couple wondering “is this the
one”?
Ø
Are you engaged couple preparing
for marriage?
Ø
Are you married and wondering how
to have a better marriage?
Ø
Are you a couple over 50 going
through a life change, like marriage, or
retirement?
Marriage is perhaps the most
complex of human relationships. The process of joining two
people in a relationship which is intended to last for a lifetime
can involve great effort.
Unfortunately, too often couples are not equipped to deal
with the challenges they face in marriage.
Recent U.S. government statistics indicate
the divorce rate in the United States is at a
historic high. It is
now estimated that over half of all first marriages will end in
divorce. In 1995, there
were about 2.4 million marriages and 1.2 divorces. The average marriage lasted
less than seven years, and nearly two out of ten marriages ended
before the third anniversary (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1995). And the rate for
2nd and 3rd marriages is even
higher.
Many divorces
occur partly because couples are not prepared for marriage.
Frequently, couples spend more time preparing for the wedding
ceremony than for their marriage relationship. And many divorces
occur due to a lack of or poor communication.
Learn how the
PREPARE-ENRICH program can help you build a stronger
marriage.
You begin by
taking one of five PREPARE-ENRICH couple inventories, which will
identify your strengths as a couple.
You then meet for 3-6 telephone or
in-person sessions (if in same location) with Cathy, a
professional trained on the Program. Cathy uses a 15 page
computer report about your couple relationship to help you build a
stronger relationship.
Goals of the
Program:
The program has 6 sections. Couples can go as far as
they want in the program.
The sections are:
- Couples Strength and Growth Areas (as
compiled from the assessment) – This session is devoted to
providing couples with feedback from their Inventories. Using the Couple Report,
the coach walks couples through the feedback process, giving them
the opportunity to identify Relationship Strength and Growth Areas
and to plan for future growth.
- Assertiveness and Active Listening –
The couple is taught how to improve their assertiveness and active
listening skills.
These skills are the foundation for building and
maintaining a good relationship.
- Communication – Communication is the
lifeblood of a relationship.
This session is designed to help couples increase their
awareness concerning patterns of communication that
presently exist in their relationship and to introduce skills that
are useful for enhancing their ability to communicate.
- Conflict and Conflict Resolution –
Learning to effectively handle conflict and the anger it produces
is an essential skill for relationship growth. In this session, the focus
is on accepting conflict as a natural part of relationships and
learning ways to manage it in a constructive manner.
- Couple Relationship and
Family-of-Origin – One of the most vital influences in the early
years of marriage is each partner’s family-of-origin. This session focuses on
understanding the impact of each partner’s family-of-origin on
their present relationship.
The Map is introduced as a tool to help couples evaluate
the effect of those families on their relationship.
- Financial Management – A significant
issue for a high percentage of married couples surrounds their
ability to manage financial resources. This session explores the
various meanings which money can have in relationships and
investigates ways to effectively handle finances as a couple.
- Intimacy and Sexuality – Developing
and maintaining intimacy is a primary goal for most couples. This session focuses on
the importance of affirmation and affection in marriage. It is designed to help
couples find a variety of ways to create intimacy, including
through their sexual relationship.
- Personal, Couple and Family Goals –
Change is inevitable but growth is intentional. This session focuses on
the importance of partners taking responsibility for growth in
their own relationship and helps them formulate a plan for
continued progress.
They focus on their personal, couple and family goals and
develop an action plan using the CHANGE
Model.
